Reminder: Stage 2 load shedding on SATURDAY – find your schedule here

Eskom has attributed the move to implement stage 2 load shedding to a continued shortage of generation capacity

Eskom is set to implement stage 2 load shedding on Saturday and Sunday between 16:00 and midnight due to capacity constraints at some of its power stations, the embattled power utility said on Friday, 5 August 2022.

“Due to the continued shortage of generation capacity, Stage 2 loadshedding is currently being implemented until midnight. Stage 2 loadshedding will again be implemented during the evening peak period of 16:00-24:00 both on Saturday and Sunday. Eskom will promptly communicate any further significant changes,” said Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha.

In a statement, Eskom says the capacity constraints have been further exacerbated by the delay in returning generation units to service each at Koeberg, Kusile and Tutuka power stations. But that’s not all – unplanned breakdowns of a generation unit each at Camden and Medupi, two at Hendrina and four units at Arnot power stations, have also factored in the move to continue load shedding this weekend.

According to Mantshantsha, there are currently have 3 571MW on planned maintenance, while another 15 624MW of capacity is
unavailable due to the breakdowns.

“Eskom would like to remind the public that loadshedding is implemented only as a last resort to protect the national grid. We therefore urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly especially during these uncertain times on the power system,” he said.
