Proteas claim HISTORIC first-ever win over India at the Wanderers

In a Test of high drama, most of the fourth day’s play was washed out by persistent rain, but just before 4pm the players were able to take to the pitch. Rising to the occasion in quite stunning fashion, the Proteas claimed victory with still seven wickets in hand as the light began to fade.

There was plenty of work for the Proteas still to do when play resumed, but Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen played with real positivity, with the latter eventually dismissed for a superbly played 40.

Temba Bavuma then walked to the crease and formed another brilliant partnership with Elgar as the two veterans carried South Africa to their highest-ever fourth innings run chase at the Wanderers.

Elgar shone for the Proteas throughout the tense second Test

The Proteas finished 243-3, with Elgar carrying his bat through after an unforgettable knock of 96, falling just short of a remarkable century.

The South African Test skipper had worn numerous body blows, but refused to give up the fight, leading from the front with an innings of immense courage and character.

Prior to this Test, India had won two Tests and not lost once at the Wanderers, while there were three draws.
