2011 | Former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled his country to Saudi Arabia after a series of street protests against his rule and bad policies, calling for freedom, justice, and democracy, which is considered the anniversary of the Tunisian Revolution and the birth of the Arab Spring.

2004 | The national flag of the Republic of Georgia, known as the “five cross flag”, was officially restored after almost 500 years of standing.

1993 | In the worst maritime disaster of peace in Poland, the ferry MS Jan Heweliusz sank off the coast of Rügen on this day, drowning 55 passengers and crew;  nine workers were rescued.

1972 | Queen Margrethe II of Denmark ascends the throne after the death of her father, Frederick IX, the first Danish queen since 1412 and the first Danish monarch who was not named Frederick or Christian since 1513.
