Love triangle GONE WRONG: Cop shoots wife DEAD, commits suicide

IPID says the Northern Cape police officer fatally shot his wife three times before he turned his service pistol on himself

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) now has yet another tragic murder suicide on its desk – this time a police officer from the Northern Cape fatally shot his wife MULTIPLE times, before turning the gun on himself. The circumstances surrounding the incident aren’t yet clear, but the cop also shot and injured a 24-year-old man suspected to have been his wife’s lover. This has prompted speculation of a love triangle gone HORRIBLY wrong.

According to IPID, the apparent murder-suicide occurred on Saturday morning, 4 December 2021. IPID spokesperson Grace Langa says they had received a phone call about the Northern Cape police officer from members (of IPID) responsible for the Springbok policing precinct.

“It is alleged that at about 6.05am, a complainant reported to the police that a member of POPS (public order police) Springbok shot and killed his wife and wounded another male person who was with the deceased,” Langa said.

While the suspected lover of the police officer’s wife managed to survive, IPID says the man is fighting for his life at a Northern Cape hospital. He apparently sustained a gunshot wound to his head.

“The second victim is a 24-year-old coloured male. He was shot on the head and sustained one entry and one exit wound on the side of his head. His condition is critical. He was treated at Springbok hospital and will be transferred to Upington Hospital,” Langa said.

As far as the officer’s wife is concerned, IPID says she had one entry wound on the rear right shoulder and two gunshot wounds to the right hip and underneath the right arm. She was declared dead at the scene.

The police officer was a seargeant attached to Springbok POP Unit.

“Sergeant Hoffmann left the scene after the alleged incident and was later found on Carolusberg Road where he allegedly committed suicide in his car by shooting himself with his service pistol,”
