Cape Town firefighters have had a tough few days – the University of Cape Town‘s vice-chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng confirmed that there was a fire which broke out on Wednesday evening, 5 January 2022, on campus.

The fire is reported to have occurred on a vacant field at the university and did not cause any significant damage. Professor Phakeng says firefighters were called to the small blaze just before midnight and managed to contain it in just over two hours. It isn’t clear how the fire was even started.

“There was a small fire on vacant field on Upper near the Dam. The fire was reported last night at 11:30pm by UCT patrolling CPS officers & std operating procedure was followed, fire services department was on site within 15 minutes & the fire was declared fully doused at 1:45 am,” Phakeng said.

NOBODY INJURED IN UCT FIRE

It isn’t clear whether the University of Cape Town (UCT) plans on investigating the origin of the fire, but the good news is nobody was harmed, as Professor Phakeng confirmed.

“There was no danger to any human life and the fire was very far from any buildings. We commend the [UCT] CPS patrol officers together with the Fire services for acting swiftly, the fire was under control from when it was reported and fire services arrived on site”
