Former American football player and actor Orenthal James Simpson, popularly known as O.J Simpson, passed away on Wednesday 10 April at the age of 76. Here’s five things to know about the football player.

O.J. SIMPSON PASSES AWAY AFTER CANCER BATTLE

The family of infamous NFL star O.J. Simpson announced his death on the morning of Thursday 11 April. In the post shared on his verified X (formerly known as Twitter) account, the family revealed he died off cancer on Wednesday 10 April.

“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace,” read the post.

CNN reports that Simpson’s prostate cancer diagnosis was made public about two months ago. So, who was O.J. Simpson? Here’s five things to know about the former footballer.

WHO WAS O.J. SIMPSON?

O.J. Simpson was involved in America’s “trial of the century” in 1995. BBC reports that he was acquitted of the murder of his former wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. The NFL star he was sentenced to 33 years’ imprisonment on unrelated charges of armed robbery in 2008. O.J. Simpson was released in 2017. In 1994, O.J Simpson was arrested as a suspect in the murder of Brown and Goldman. Brown and Goldman were stabbed to death outside Brown’s house in Los Angeles.

On the day he was meant to turn himself in, he fled in a white Ford Bronco, leading the police on a slow chase around Los Angeles. Eventually, at the trial, the jury on the case found Simpson not guilty.

Before Brown, Simpson was married to Marguerite Whitley. The pair married in 1967 but divorced in 1979.

Simpson and Brown have three children together – Arnelle, Jason and Aaren. While he had two children with Brown – Sydney and Justin. US Weekly reports that Sydney and Justin’s grandparents Judhita and Louis Brown got custody of them.

The late footballer was also a grandfather. He was said to be surrounded by his grandchildren when he died, according to the statement released by his family. However, it is unclear how many grandchildren he has.
