Andile Jali scored a scorcher against Pirates but his team Chippa United ultimately lost 2-1 on the night to the Buccaneers.

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Andile Jali refused to celebrate after scoring against his former team.

The 34-year-old star opened the scoring for Chippa United with a scorcher goal against the Buccaneers. On Wednesday night, the two teams faced off at the Orlando Stadium in a Betway Premiership. Pirates defence cleared the ball but only as far as Jali, who volleyed the ball into the back of the net.

The Sea Robbers, playing their first league match of the season, hit back just before half-time thanks to Tshegofatso Mabasa’s penalty. Pirates pushed for the winner in the second half and were rewarded late on when Monnapule Saleng’s header found the back of the net.

Orlando Pirates’ win takes them fourth on the log behind Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. After Wednesday’s match, Chippa United coach Kwanele Kopo explained why he substituted Andile Jali at halftime against Pirates.

“Andile was struggling with a hamstring issue,” Kopo told SuperSport TV. “It was a risk to start him, considering he had only trained for three days. However, we needed his experience, character, and technical ability. Once we lost him at halftime, we struggled to maintain our defensive structure.”

Andile Jali spent four years with Pirates before leaving for Belgium. The former Bafana Bafana returned to the country to join Mamelodi Sundowns where he spent five seasons.
