Mamelodi Sundowns through to Caf Champions League semis

Ronwen Williams was the hero as Mamelodi Sundowns edged out Young Africans in the quarterfinals of the Caf Champions League.

Mamelodi Sundowns are through to the semi-finals of the 2024 Caf Champions League following their 3-2 penalty shootout win over Young Africans on Friday.

This encounter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium was expected to produce fireworks given that both teams had played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg.

It was an exciting match of football but it only lacked goals until the final whistle went off after 90 minutes.

Well, it wasn’t short of drama though as Young Africans thought they had scored late in the second half through Aziz Ki’s thunder strike.

However, the referee had to check with VAR officials if Ki’s strike had crossed the goal line.

And after the consultation, it Young Africans were denied what looked like a legitimate goal from TV replays.

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the hero in the shootout as he stopped two penalties to send Sundowns through to the semis.

He denied Aziz Ki and Dickson Job while Gaston Sirino was denied by Yanga shot-stopper Djigui Diarra.

Marcelo Allende, Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Neo Maema all converted their spot-kicks for the Brazilians.
