On 8 and 18 April 2020, a total of 256 stranded South African citizens from Germany and Europe were flown from Frankfurt to Johannesburg as part of the repatriation process. The process was a direct result of the strong bilateral relations between South Africa and Germany which show a high level of cooperation between the German and SA authorities – especially DIRCO and the Federal Foreign Office – and South African Airways! According to SAA peronnel, “it was a very emotional situation with the passengers on board singing Nkosi Sikelel´ iAfrika and a rainbow rising during push-back!”
