PCB chairman says Babar Azam’s captaincy is uncertain

Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi announced Thursday that former cricketers and head coach Gary Kirsten will decide Babar Azam’s captaincy. He did not name them.

“There is, however, no decision taken so far related to Babar Azam,” the interior minister and top cricket official told reporters in Lahore. Since their defeat in the T20 World Cup, which humiliated Pakistan, the Green Shirts have been under fire.

They lost to minnows the US, who were competing on the international scene for the first time, and India, who almost won, while winning over weak teams Ireland and Canada after grueling matches. The PCB chief told reporters that hasty decisions by furious people are usually bad.

“I’m only speaking to those former cricketers who are interested in the betterment of Pakistan cricket,” he said. The top official called for a “major surgery” last month due to the national team’s poor performance.

“People are asking about surgery, but decisions should not be made when angry. Hasty decisions typically backfire.” Naqvi also criticized the selecting committee’s decisions. “Whoever made wrong decisions in the selection committee will also be held accountable,” stated.

The PCB chief said he contacted head coach Kirsten and assistant coach Azhar Mahmood to discuss Pakistan’s performance.

“Kisten has also submitted a detailed report on Pakistan team’s T20 World Cup performance,” Naqvi said. Naqvi said he is investigating “grouping and politics” among the Pakistan team. He also maintained that domestic cricket success will determine national team selection.
