Meanwhile in Group D, Burkina Faso narrowly beat Mauritania 1-0 in their opener. The Stallions had initially looked set to join big hitters Egypt, Cameroon, Algeria, Nigeria and Ghana in failing to win their opening match. Bertrand Traoré scored the winning goal in the 96th minute after converting a penalty.

Finally, in Tuesday’s late kick-off, Mali beat South Africa 2-0 in group E. It was a solid performance from The Eagles with a talented squad – perhaps their most talented in a while.
