Massive water outage hitting Johannesburg and Pretoria this week – here’s who’s affected

Rand Water in Johannesburg and the City of Tshwane have issued an alert, warning residents of a 53-hour water outage due to planned maintenance this week.

The planned shutdown is to complete a tie-in of a newly installed S4 pipeline into the existing S4 pipeline in the region, the group said. The maintenance will take place from 17h00 on Thursday (11 August) and will continue to 22h00 on Saturday (13 August).

“Residents are urged to use water sparingly during this time to prevent reservoirs from running dry. Please store sufficient water to sustain you for the duration of the shutdown, water tankers will be on standby as an alternative water supply,” it said.

The shutdown will impact many areas on the East Rand, as well as the north-eastern suburbs in Tshwane, the group said.

The following areas will experience interruptions during the maintenance window:

Benoni, Daveyton, Etwatwa:

  • Morehill
  • Crystal Park
  • Hillcrest
  • Benoni AH
  • Cloverdene
  • Chief Albert Luthuli
  • Mayfield
  • Etwatwa

For these areas, Rand Water said that water tankers will service the affected areas for the duration of the shurdown.

Brakpan and Springs:

  • Mpact-New Era
  • Sunair Park higher lying area / Barsalinga complex
  • Vulcania
  • Maryvlei
  • Witpoortjie
  • Welgedacht
  • Bakerton
  • Slovo Park
  • Payneville
  • Gugulethu / Everest
  • Ergo-Mkhancwa

For these areas, Rand Water said that six roving water tankers will service the affected areas.

Tsakane:

  • Tsakane
  • Langaville
  • Geluksdal
  • Labore
  • Withok

For these areas, Rand Water said that water tankers will be in the areas, including two stationed at Pholosong Hospital.

During the shutdown, the following reservoirs and areas in Tshwane might be affected:

“The City of Tshwane sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that may occur as a result of the above-mentioned repairs. We appeal to all residents to use water sparingly during this time. Water tankers will be on standby for alternative water supply,” the city said.
