Tri-Union Seafoods has recalled certain canned tuna packaged under the Genova, Van Camp's, H-E-B, and Trader Joe's brand names. The tuna was sold at several retailers, including Costco, Trader Joe's, and Walmart.

The tuna was recalled voluntarily after the company was alerted by its supplier that the “easy open” pull tab lids may have a defect that could impact the product seal. That could cause the lid to leak or to become contaminated with botulism, a type of food poisoning.

Botulism is a rare but potentially fatal illness caused by Clostridium botulinum or similar bacteria. The bacteria can make the toxin in foods, wounds, and in the intestines of infants, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It’s rare for the bacteria to make people sick, except in certain conditions, including improperly preserved or fermented food.
