Fashion statement: Would you spend R2k on a designer face mask?

With masks finally a thing of the past, would you splurge on a face mask fashion statement like the one worn and designed by Rich Mnisi?

Now that government has officially scrapped face mask mandates, retailers are wondering what to do with all their stock. But for designers like Rich Mnisi and others, the question now is: will consumers spend almost R2 000 on a mask just for the sake of fashion?

The celebrity designer sent pulses racing on social media this week when he showed off a sexy look.

Rich Mnisi wore a baby blue thong bodysuit with matching gloves and a balaclava face mask. He captioned a pic of the post which broke the internet: “Worldwide hoodie with the mask outside in case you forgot how we act outside”.

The label worn by the stylish star was not his own, but from a global brand called Perfect Frame Aesthetics. And whilst the mask – which costs roughly R2 000 – was not designed by Rich Mnisi, he has previously launched fashion face masks back in 2020.

Modelled by pal Sarah Langa, the SA designer showcased a series of masks adorned with premium material and adorned in Swarovski crystals, which cost a cool R2 000.

Similarly, designers Maxhosa Africa and Gert-Johan Coetzee also debuted designer masks with prices ranging from R200 – R1000.

Rich Mnisi’s look was an instant hit with fans and celeb pals like Bonang, Boity, Cassper Nyovest, Khanyi Mbau, Pearl Thusi, and many more.

But masks were the furthest things from the minds of ordinary South Africans, who begged the designer to release a range of beauty products instead

@n_ipsy: “If Rich Mnisi created a skincare line, I’m definitely buying it cause his skin is forever so moisturized and gorgeous”

@MSAKAZI_RSA: “What lotion does he use guys? I need that”

@zolah_badu: “The fact that Rich Mnisi hasn’t dropped a skincare range is criminal”

With faces on full display thanks to face masks being a thing of the past, perhaps Rich Mnisi will take fans up with his own skincare collection.
